The British writer Angela Carter said, “Reading a book is like re-writing
it for yourself... You bring a novel, anything you read, all your experience
of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms.”
What’s the point of reading fiction?
There are many answers to that question. What is yours?
In this module we have divided the vast field of literature in English
in two categories. We hope it will help you to choose novels to read. Your
task is to read two of the suggested novels and write an essay where you compare,
contrast and analyse the two novels. Feel free
to choose other novels than the ones suggested.
The geographic category
English-speaking authors around the world, from countries where English
is spoken as a first or a second language. Most of those countries are
members of the Commonwealth and former colonies.
The Commonwealth is an association of 53 countries, most of them former colonies,
that have been, or in some cases still are, ruled by Britain.
The genre category
Some literary genres of
the 20thcentury became more important towards the end of the century
and here we have chosen the genres women writers/human relations, science
fiction/fantasy/horror, thrillers/detective stories, and postcolonial/immigrant
literature.
Genre
is defined in Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary as a particular type
or style of literature, art film or music that you can recognize because
of its special features.
