Introduction to English A

As you probably know English is spoken in a large number of countries, as mother tongue, as official language or as second language. The ability to use English is necessary when you study, when you travel abroad and when you have different kinds of international relations, in your social life as well as in your career. Whatever your reasons for studying English might be, our intent is to help you develop your communicative ability, in writing and in speaking.

This course is designed as an Internet course. You can find nearly all that you need on Internet, although there are a couple of books that you need to buy. Further down at this page you will find a detailed list.

On this course there are 8 assignments. Some are spoken, some are written, some involve you in a little research and some you can probably do without much preparation. Many of the assignments give you an opportunity to work with subjects that interest you. We are not completely free to choose because Skolverket tells us we must have certain elements on the course. If you like, you may have a look at Skolverkets mål och betygskriterier for English A.

There are also 4 workshops, each taking up one day. These are held regularly in Härnösand. It is good to attend as many of these workshops as possible. To complete the course you should go to at least two workshops but if you cannot attend at least two workshops contact your teacher about alternative assignments. You will find the dates of the workshops further down at this page.

If you are getting financial help with your studies you will have to study regularly and finish the course within a certain time. Otherwise you can study at your own speed, as it suits you. However, it is always good to plan your studies in advance. In fact, this is so important that it is your first assignment.

If it has been some time since you studied or used English, then you could "warm up" your English by using it in some way. Read a novel, use internet, look through an old course book, or read newspapers and magazines. You could also listen to English language radio or watch CNN instead of "Aktuellt".

The course finishes with a written exam. We have exam dates in Härnösand, Stockholm, Norrköping, Gothenburg, Malmö or Jonköping. If you cannot get to Härnösand, Stockholm etc then contact your teacher and we can arrange something together.

A few technical details - You need to have access to internet, a pentium-standard PC or a modern Macintosh, a CD-ROM player and a sound card. You should be a quite experienced computer user.

To help you get through the course:

  • The text book Progress Topics, Hedencrona, Smed-Gerdin, Watcyn-Jones - Corona /564-0770-X/
  • CD-ROM with the course off-line (lånematerial från SSVH)
  • This web site

You might also need:

  • A grammar book, for ex Hargeviks engelska grammatik - Almqvist & Wiksell /91-21-12754-9 /
  • A good dictionary

Remember that you do not have to be connected to the net all the time. Pages that you have visited are stored in the computer behind "Tidigare", eller "Historik" behind "Verktyg".
