Most of us have been in the situation where we have managed to make ourselves understood in a foreign country by pointing, waving and shouting - and often we get what we want. But this is not really the most
efficient method of communicating - at least not over a period of time!
A much better method is to learn the local language. But how many languages should we then learn?
Learning English is a good choice to make for general communication in the global village. You are almost certain to find somebody who can speak English - wherever you are in the world.
As a consequence of this widespread usage, there are many variations in how the language is written and spoken. In this unit we will listen to some examples of these variations.
