Around the streets in India you will see white cows. These are considered to be Sacred Cows. Since cows are sacred in India, they are free to go just about anywhere, and they usually do. It is not uncommon to wander into a store and see a shopkeeper trying to push a bull or cow out of the store.

The cow is important in Hinduism for several reasons:
  1. MILK. Milk is very important in Indian food traditions. Since the cow gives us milk meant for a calf, people respect the cow.
  2. WORK. Cows are used in farming to pull things. Indian religion says that animals should not be killed if you can find something else to eat. The cow helps farmers get something else to eat.
  3. RELIGION. There are many traditions and beliefs that have to do with cows in India. Cows are very important in the religion.
