Social English

Being sociable in a language and culture other than your own.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do! - again!

Social English is something that we usually spend a lot of time discussing in the classroom. The list of variables affecting the choice of the “right” thing to say in a particular situation is endless. A few of the variables are: culture, situation, age, gender, rank.

Because the use of social English changes from country to country, and person to person, it is very difficult to give “hard and fast” rules. But it is possible for us to look at some grammatical features and conventions,  as well as some stock phrases that we think will be useful to you.

This area is under continuous development. But to “get the ball rolling” we have included a number of ‘test yourself’ exercises. We thank other colleagues at CFL for providing us with much of the foundation material for this unit.
