Resources for Academic Writing Formalities

Formalities

When you write formal reports or essays you have to follow given instructions regarding formalities.

Number of Pages

5-10

Font and Font Size

Times New Roman size 12.
Headlines size 14.

You count every page beginning from the title page but you do not write the number until page 4.

The language that you use should be formally correct and no slang or other words that belong to the spoken language should be used.

Be careful with paragraphs (a new paragraph is done by skipping one line) and always use complete sentences.

Never end your sentences with double signs (!!, ?!).

Do not put any full stops in headlines.

Your essay is a report and the style should therefore be clear and to the point. Always try to be objective and avoid words that might be imprecise or vague.

The words as listed in Top 200 Words must be correct. Spelling mistakes will affect the judgement of your work. Also check your spelling! You will find useful lists in chapter 6 Checklist.

Length

The number of pages (body) ought to be somewhere between 5 and 10.  The text should be word processed, double or 1 ½ spaced, with a line length of 13 cm.
